Early 2006, after a couple of years in the US, French
expat Sebastien Labat is looking for activities related
to the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany.
Broadcasting at Fado is almost all he found!
His entrepreneurship spirit - in the country itself of
the entrepreneurs - did not need more sparkles to
get on fire! While watching one of the FIFA World
Cup prep games in April, he told one of his French
friends, Antoine Grand-Clement, about his idea of
starting a local amateur World Cup Soccer
Tournament. The “C’est enorme!” (This is
awesome) he got back from Antoine brought the
confidence and motivation he needed.
This was the official birth of the very first Chicago
World Cup Soccer tournament.
On June 24th, 2006, Chicago was hosting the very
first Chicago World Cup Soccer tournament.
The tournament was gathering 16 amateur national
soccer teams for its first edition.
Even though the actual German national team was
playing home that Saturday (in the actual 2006 FIFA
World-Cup in Germany) the German American
Chamber of commerce did not miss that first edition,
this was their World Cup after all. The “Chicago
Germans”, as well as most of all the communities
involved early in the Chicago World Cup have played
in everyone of the tournaments since.
organized in the Chicagoland area, along with
tournament drawings, cocktails, after-parties and
official diners, the Chicago World Cup events have
always received a great feed-back from the foreign
communities and local players involved: Games
on time, great service such as free massage, free
professional photographers, free beverages, high
quality food concessions, perfect facilities, instant
results and rankings, etc.
The only ugly comment ever heard about the
Chicago World Cup tournaments is the one you
will hear in every corner of every soccer field in the
world, no matter what the competition is: MLS, FIFA
World-Cup, English Premiership, College Soccer
or Italian Serie A, we have to admit: our supporters
are real soccer fans and they say “the ref sucks!”
too, even though they don't!
